The Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council held a meeting with the Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Thailand to the Russian Federation.
Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev held a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Kingdom of Thailand to the Russian Federation Sasiwat Wongsinsawat.
Konstantin Kosachev noted that the relations between the two countries are in a very good condition and have a rich history. This year marks the 125th anniversary of diplomatic relations.
“We put a great value on the Kingdom of Thailand’s freestanding and independent course in foreign policy. Understandably, Thailand has its own interests in international affairs, and you are consistently promoting them. But even when our approaches do not coincide completely, it does not prevent us from building our relationship based on the principles of mutual respect, equality and close cooperation,” Konstantin Kosachev emphasised.
He also noted the important role of the Kingdom of Thailand in the contemporary international policy. “The APEC summit will soon take place in your country and it will attract the attention of the entire world. The Russian Federation will take place in the summit at the high level; the delegation will be headed by First Deputy Prime Minister Andrei Belousov.”
Konstantin Kosachev said that in early October, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with President of the National Assembly of Thailand Chuan Leekpai on the sidelines of the G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit held in Indonesia. In late October, the Russian parliamentary delegation led by Federation Council First Deputy Speaker Andrey Yatskin visited Thailand to take part in the regular session of the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum. They had meetings with the speakers of both chambers of Thailand’s parliament.
Sasiwat Wongsinsawat emphasised that the two countries’ relations are at a high level and assured the Russian party that he will do everything in his power to ensure their further development, including at the interregional level. He also noted the active cooperation between the friendship groups of the parliaments of Russia and Thailand.
