Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko meets with President of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune

The Federation Council Speaker heads a Russian parliamentary delegation on an official visit to Algeria.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with President of the People`s Democratic Republic of Algeria Abdelmadjid Tebboune.

Valentina Matvienko delivered a message from President of Russia Vladimir Putin to the head of the Algerian state inviting Abdelmadjid Tebboune to pay an official visit to the Russian Federation and to take part in the 2nd Russia-Africa Summit.

The meeting participants discussed various aspects of Russian-Algerian cooperation and a number of regional and international issues. “Algeria is Russia’s reliable and time-tested partner on the African continent,” Valentina Matvienko said. She noted the independent policy of Algeria and its consistent striving to expand relations with Russia. “I was happy to hear the President say that Russia has been and remains a great friend of Algeria. These words are profoundly meaningful.”

“The same attitude towards Algeria is found in our country. We need to cherish this. We have good prospects for mutually beneficial cooperation in the most diverse spheres, including energy, transport, agriculture, pharmaceuticals, equipment manufacture, as well as culture and education. We will certainly implement these plans,” the Federation Council Speaker said.

Cooperation between Russia and Algeria is mutually beneficial, Valentina Matvienko noted. “Russian-Algerian relations remain unaffected by fleeting political considerations and are not influenced by third forces.”

Bilateral interaction also has great significance for stabilising and balancing the gas market, the Federation Council Speaker believes. “We cooperate successfully in the OPEC + format. Algeria has voiced its desire to join the BRICS integration format. Russia will certainly support this intention and will facilitate this in every way.”

The officials reaffirmed that Algerian and Russian approaches to the main issues of the international agenda are close or identical, the Federation Council Speaker said. “We believe that it is unacceptable to interfere in the domestic affairs of sovereign countries, and that every state has an inalienable right to determine its own development path. We also advocate an equitable, democratic and multipolar world. This creates a good foundation for our interaction at the UN and other international venues,” Valentina Matvienko said.
