Iliyas Umakhanov: A good foundation has been created for advancing interparliamentary relations between Russia and Croatia

Members of the Federation Council met with the delegation of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Croatian Parliament.

Members of the Federation Council received the delegation of the Foreign Policy Committee of the Croatian Parliament (Hrvatski Sabor) led by Committee Chair Miro Kovac.

Opening the meeting, Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Iliyas Umakhanov said he was pleased with the dynamically developing bilateral cultural and people-to-people ties and the growth in trade.

“The political dialogue between the leaders of our two countries has created a good foundation for advancing interparliamentary relations,” he said.

Iliyas Umakhanov said that coordinating joint efforts in international parliamentary forums was one vast area of activity.

The Deputy Speaker congratulated the delegation on the election of Croatian Minister of Foreign and European Affairs Marija Pejcinovic-Buric as Secretary General of the Council of Europe. “Hopefully, the Croatian chairmanship will help the Council of Europe overcome the system-wide crisis at this important European parliamentary body that we have seen during these years,” he said.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Konstantin Kosachyov said during the meeting that Russia considered Croatia to be a very interesting and promising partner.

“In recent years we have worked together to intensify bilateral relations,” the senator said. “Clearly, this work has borne fruit.” According to Konstantin Kosachyov, the two countries have to compare regularly their positions and views on various issues.

Miro Kovac spoke about the importance of efforts to advance the political and economic dialogue between the two countries. “We in Croatia believe that intensive dialogue has to be maintained between Croatia and Russia, as well as between the European Union and Russia,” he said. “We need to act together to systematically improve relations in Europe.”

The meeting was also attended by First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Sergei Kislyak; Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Andrei Klimov; members of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Oleg Morozov and Olga Timofeyeva; and member of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture and head of the Group on Cooperation Between the Federation Council and the Parliament [Sabor] of the Republic of Croatia Alexei Kondratyev.
