Iliyas Umakhanov: Russia and Iran have long-standing track record of expanding inter-parliamentary ties

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council had a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Russia.


Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Iliyas Umakhanov had a meeting with newly appointed Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Islamic Republic of Iran to Russia Kazem Jalali.

Iliyas Umakhanov conveyed to Kazem Jalali congratulations on behalf of Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko in connection with his appointment to this office, and emphasised its importance in today’s challenging international environment, as well as for further developing relations between Russia and Iran.

The Deputy Speaker went on to note the high level of inter-parliamentary cooperation between the two countries. “For many years now, our countries have been proactive in expanding our parliamentary contacts,” he said.

Mr Umakhanov pointed out that Russia had been working effectively with the Iranian Embassy, highlighting its meaningful contribution to developing region-to-region ties between Russia and Iran. “As a chamber of the regions, the Federation Council views this sphere as a priority,” he noted.

Kazem Jalali stressed the positive momentum in bilateral ties on political, trade, economic, cultural and security matters. “We see that Russia is also committed to expanding its ties with Iran across the board,” he pointed out.

The Iranian Ambassador noted the importance of region-to-regions ties and proposed exploring opportunities for holding meetings of governors representing the two countries in Moscow, Tehran, Isfahan or Shiraz.

Vladimir Kravchenko, member of the Federation Council Committee on Economic Policy and member of the Federation Council Group for Cooperation with the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran, also took part in the meeting.
