Grigory Karasin meets with Brazilian Ambassador to Russia Rodrigo Baena Soares

Russian senators attach great importance to interaction with their Brazilian colleagues, the Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs said.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin had a meeting with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Federative Republic of Brazil to the Russian Federation Rodrigo Baena Soares.

The meeting was also attended by First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov and First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on the Budget and Financial Markets Sergey Ryabukhin, who heads the Federation Council’s group for cooperation with the Federal Senate of the National Congress of Brazil.

According to Grigory Karasin, Brazil is one of Russia’s pivotal partners in Latin America and the world. “Our cooperation is particularly valuable in a situation where the ‘collective West’ has launched an aggressive anti-Russia campaign and is making attempts to bring large-scale pressure to bear on this country and wreck Russia’s long-standing economic arrangements with its foreign partners,” he said.

“Russian senators attach great importance to interaction with their Brazilian colleagues and to intensifying exchanges between the supreme legislative bodies of both countries,” Grigory Karasin said, adding: “On 6 September, the speakers of both countries’ parliaments will attend the Eighth BRICS Parliamentary Forum via videoconference.”

Grigory Karasin expressed hope that the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs and the related committee of the Federal Senate of the National Congress of Brazil would hold a joint meeting during the autumn parliamentary session.

According to Rodrigo Baena Soares, Brazil pays much attention to the parliamentary component of bilateral Russian-Brazilian relations.

The participants in the meeting discussed various aspects of interaction between Russia and Brazil, specifically trade, the economy and culture, an important element of friendly interstate relations.

They also focused on the unlawful anti-Russia sanctions regime and the unfriendly countries’ attempts to start the process of expelling Russia from a number of international organisations.

Grigory Karasin updated Rodrigo Baena Soares on Russia’s special military operation in Ukraine.
