Valentina Matvienko: The CIS Interparliamentary Assembly session in Samarkand was fruitful and eventful

The Federation Council Speaker summed up the results of the meeting of MPs.

Federation Council Speaker and Chairperson of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly Valentina Matvienko summed up the results of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly (CIS IPA) session in Samarkand, Uzbekistan.

“The Commonwealth format has proved effective and highly popular,” Valentina Matvienko told journalists. She said the proof is in the results of meetings between CIS heads of state and the work of heads of government, during which the participants discuss specific issues of expanding economic cooperation.

“The activity of the CIS IPA, which brings together members of the CIS parliaments, confirms the significance of this format,” Valentina Matvienko noted.

In her opinion, Kazakhstan’s chairmanship of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly filled the work of the Assembly with new content. She expressed confidence that Kyrgyzstan’s chairmanship of the CIS IPA next year would also prove just as successful.

The Chairperson of the Council of the CIS Interparliamentary Assembly thanked President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev for his invitation to hold a full-fledged session of the Assembly in Samarkand. Valentina Matvienko also thanked Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva for organising the event.

“All conditions for holding formal and informal events and meetings were in place in Samarkand. Tremendous work was done. Uzbekistan has shown that it can hold top-level events,” Valentina Matvienko said.

She expressed satisfaction with the content of the two-day session, whose participants reviewed a number of high-quality documents. “This year, we have drafted 40 model laws and regulatory documents. They have been carefully finalised at specialised commissions and coordinated at national parliaments and agencies,” the Chairperson of the Council of the CIS IPA noted.

Valentina Matvienko also drew attention to the special atmosphere at the meetings. “When we gather at a venue, we act like a big, close-knit team of people aiming to create favourable conditions for the development of states, for improving people’s well-being and facilitating mutually beneficial cooperation in the CIS region,” Valentina Matvienko said in conclusion.

Attending the briefing were heads of parliamentary delegations: Speaker of the Senate of the Oliy Majlis (Parliament) of the Republic of Uzbekistan Tanzila Narbayeva, Speaker of the Milli Majlis (National Assembly) of the Republic of Azerbaijan Sahiba Gafarova, Speaker of the National Assembly of Armenia Alen Simonyan, Speaker of the Council of the Republic of the National Assembly of the Republic of Belarus Natalya Kochanova, Speaker of the Senate of the Parliament of the Republic of Kazakhstan Maulen Ashimbayev, Speaker of the Jogorku Kenesh (Supreme Council) of the Kyrgyz Republic Nurlanbek Shakiyev and Speaker of the Majlisi Namoyandagon (Assembly of Representatives) of the Majlisi Oli (Parliament) of Tajikistan Mahmadtoir Zokirzoda.
