Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev meets with Syrian Ambassador to Russia Bashar Jaafari

The meeting covered prospects for Russian-Syrian relations and opportunities for intensifying interparliamentary ties.

Federation Council Deputy Speaker Konstantin Kosachev met with Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of the Syrian Arab Republic to the Russian Federation Bashar Jaafari. The meeting was attended by Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Defence and Security Sergey Muratov.

Konstantin Kosachev expressed his support for the victims of the recent devastating earthquake in Syria.

“Russian rescuers promptly provided real assistance to the affected citizens of Syria. We are sad to note that some other countries, primarily Western ones, have gone the way of politicising humanitarian aid and have actually denied support to the people of Syria, referring to the illegitimate sanctions in place,” Konstantin Kosachev said.

“The nations of Russia and Syria have longstanding relations of friendship and mutual assistance. This is fully reflected in the nature of interaction between the Federation Council and the People’s Council of the Syrian Arab Republic,” Konstantin Kosachev stressed.

Bashar Jaafari reaffirmed the invariably friendly nature of relations between Moscow and Damascus. The Ambassador praised Russia’s assistance in preserving the independence, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Syrian Arab Republic.

During the meeting, the sides discussed developments in Syria, prospects for Russian-Syrian relations, as well as opportunities for intensifying interparliamentary ties with the participation of Russian and Syrian parliamentary friendship groups.
