Valentina Matvienko met with President of China Xi Jinping

The meeting was held during a Russian parliamentary delegation’s official visit to China.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with President of the People’s Republic of China Xi Jinping during an official visit by Russian lawmakers to China.

The Speaker conveyed an oral message from President of Russia Vladimir Putin. “Our head of state has a warm recollection of your visit in March, your lengthy conversations and productive talks.”

Valentina Matvienko pointed out that comprehensive partnership and strategic cooperation between Russia and China had reached a record high level and continued to develop progressively. “Our leaders are playing the key role in this. Such cooperation is in the interests of both countries,” she said. The Speaker also mentioned consensus in Russia regarding the development of Russia-China interaction.

She noted that the main goal of the Russian delegation’s visit to Beijing was to stimulate inter-parliamentary cooperation as a vital element of interstate relations and to hold the eighth meeting of the Inter-parliamentary Commission on cooperation between the Federal Assembly of Russia and the National People’s Congress of China. “It is the first in-person meeting since the COVID pandemic. We have agreed to intensify delegation exchanges and ties between friendship groups and sector-specific committees, as well as to exchange law-making experience, in particular on improving legislative activities in light of new challenges and threats,” the Federation Council Speaker said.

Valentina Matvienko noted that one of the main goals of inter-parliamentary cooperation was to ensure the implementation of agreements reached at the highest level and to boost interregional cooperation.

The meeting was attended by committee chairs and deputy chairs of both chambers of the Russian parliament and Russian Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to China Igor Morgulov.
