Valentina Matvienko: The task of the parliaments of Russia and Turkiye is to support bilateral economic and investment cooperation

The Federation Council Speaker and the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye discussed interparliamentary interaction.

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko met with Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye Numan Kurtulmus on the sidelines of the 9th G20 Parliamentary Speakers’ Summit in New Delhi.

The head of the Federation Council expressed satisfaction that despite all the difficulties of the international agenda, the political dialogue is progressing at all levels. “Russia greatly appreciates Turkiye’s balanced policy.”

Valentina Matvienko said that the upper house of the Russian parliament is interested in stepping up cooperation with their Turkish colleagues so that it corresponds to contacts at the highest political level.

The Federation Council Speaker praised the interregional cooperation between the two countries. “We are satisfied with the high level of our economic and investment cooperation; our bilateral trade has exceeded $60 billion. We are not stopping there: mutually beneficial cooperation is gaining momentum and scale. The task of the parliaments is to support this development.”

The Federation Council Speaker called on her Turkish colleague to step up the work of the High-Level Commission, the procedural rules of which were signed in Moscow in 2019, but not a single meeting has yet taken place.

Numan Kurtulmus agreed that the interparliamentary dimension of bilateral relations is aimed at strengthening political cooperation between Turkiye and Russia, as well as deepening economic cooperation.

“Thanks to regular contacts between our presidents, we have achieved good dynamics in relations between our countries. But we should move forward to new opportunities and develop economic cooperation. Turkiye wants to become a gas hub, we are an important transit country for Russian gas and are ready to continue working with Russia on this matter. Cooperation in nuclear energy is also an area that unites our countries and interests,” said the Speaker of the Grand National Assembly of Turkiye.

Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev also took part in the meeting.
