Valentina Matvienko: BRICS countries step up cooperation at regional and municipal levels

5th BRICS International Municipal Forum opens in St Petersburg.


Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko sent greetings to the organisers and participants of the 5th BRICS International Municipal Forum.

“Since its inception, the forum has gained a standing as one of the effective mechanisms for strengthening relations with the countries of Latin America, Asia, Africa and the Middle East,” the upper house speaker said in her message.

According to Valentina Matvienko, the event contributes to enhancing comprehensive cooperation between the BRICS countries and other states at the regional and municipal levels. “The rich business programme at the forum will allow us to discuss a wide range of current problems, exchange experience, showcase the capabilities of regions and municipalities, and present the best projects,” she added.

The Federation Council Speaker expressed confidence that constructive discussions would produce proposals to help improve the work of local self-government bodies, and promote the socioeconomic development of regions, making them more attractive as investment destinations.

The message from the Federation Council Speaker was read out by Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrey Klimov.

The forum will feature roundtable discussions on Growth Points and Drivers of Regional and Municipal Development and Public Support for BRICS Development.

Also attending the event were Senators Andrey Klimov and Vitaly Nazarenko.
