Lilia Gumerova: The elections in the Republic of Indonesia were conducted to a high standard

The senator took part in monitoring the general election in Indonesia.


Lilia Gumerova, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture, head of the group for cooperation between the Federation Council and the Regional Representative Council of Indonesia, took part in the monitoring mission to observe the general election in the Republic of Indonesia.

The senator visited polling stations in Bangli Regency near Denpasar.

“The observers learned more about the country’s voting procedures, security measures at polling stations, and what information was available about the candidates,” Lilia Gumerova commented.

The senator noted that, after speaking to voters, the observers confirmed that the public had received prior information about the candidates and their election programmes.

The senator also spoke with the heads of election commissions at the polling stations she visited, who reassured her that the election was conducted in accordance with Indonesian law and was democratic and transparent, as noted by the international observers.

In conclusion of the mission, Lilia Gumerova participated in the international oversight of the vote counting at one of the polling stations. The foreign observers confirmed that the voter turnout was, the voting methods provided were acceptable, and that it was easy to complete ballots. Additionally, they acknowledged the transparency in summarising the voting results for the President, heads of parliament, as well as regional and municipal authorities of the Republic of Indonesia.
