Valentina Matvienko: Cooperation between Russia and Uzbekistan is a comprehensive strategic partnership

The Federation Council Speaker discussed interparliamentary cooperation with Speaker of the Oliy Majlis Legislative Chamber of the Republic of Uzbekistan.


Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko held a meeting with the Speaker of the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan Nurdinjon Ismoilov.

The Federation Council Speaker noted that Russia and Uzbekistan had reached a level of understanding and cooperation that could be characterised as a comprehensive strategic partnership and alliance. According to her, this was reaffirmed by the President of Uzbekistan’s official visit to Moscow last October.

“A special relationship of trust has developed between the heads of state, which sets the tone for bilateral interaction. The two countries’ leaders attach great importance to interparliamentary dialogue,” Valentina Matvienko emphasised.

The parties acknowledged the active development of relations between the two countries’ governments: through the Joint Commission at the level of heads of government, as well as the Intergovernmental Commission on Economic Cooperation.

Valentina Matvienko spoke highly of the level of interparliamentary dialogue between Russia and Uzbekistan.

“The Commission on Cooperation between the Upper Houses of Parliaments is working effectively. Senators of the Russian Federation are paying close attention to strengthening the legal framework and the legal foundation for the development of relations.”

The Federation Council Speaker stressed the importance of creating an interparliamentary commission on cooperation between the State Duma and the Legislative Chamber of the Oliy Majlis of the Republic of Uzbekistan. According to Valentina Matvienko, Nurdinjon Ismoilov’s visit to Moscow and the expansion of interaction formats between parliamentarians, will be a significant step towards strengthening cooperation in various fields.

The Federation Council speaker invited female parliamentarians to take part in the Eurasian Women’s Forum this year.

The Speaker of the Oliy Majlis Legislative Chamber believes that every meeting of parliamentarians is valuable and substantive. “We appreciate the efforts of Russian legislators in developing relations between Russia and Uzbekistan.”

During the conversation, trade and economic cooperation, expanding ties at the regional level, and interaction in education were also touched upon.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on the Rules of Procedure and Parliamentary Governance Vyacheslav Timchenko, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov, First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Constitutional Legislation and State Building Vladimir Poletayev, and First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Iliyas Umakhanov.
