The Federation Council Speaker is holding bilateral meetings with heads of foreign parliamentary delegations on the sidelines of the 150th IPU Assembly in Tashkent.
Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko held a meeting with Chairman of the Senate of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan Yusuf Raza Gilani in Tashkent as part of her engagement in the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.
The participants touched upon bilateral and international issues and praised strong dynamics of the Russian-Pakistani parliamentary contacts, among others.
In October 2024, a Federation Council delegation led by Valentina Matvienko visited Islamabad to meet with the Pakistani leaders and heads of both houses of the parliament. The talks were followed by painstaking efforts to finalise the agreements covering a wide range of bilateral cooperation areas. The dialogue continued during a visit by the delegation of the lower house of the Pakistani parliament to Moscow. Cooperation agreements were signed between the upper and lower houses of the parliaments of the two countries, and friendship groups remain fully operational.
The participants of the meeting discussed the Pakistani senators’ visit to Moscow in May. “We must continue to work hard to update the contractual and legal framework underlying our interaction, to promote economic and investment cooperation, and to strengthen the interregional and youth ties,” Valentina Matvienko said.
She added that a representative delegation from Pakistan is expected to attend the 11th Nevsky International Ecological Congress in St Petersburg on 22–23 May.
Yusuf Raza Gilani gave high praise to Valentina Matvienko’s visit to Islamabad last year. He also mentioned the success of the talks and shared an update about the efforts to implement the existing agreements. “We are ready to do everything that is needed to strengthen multi-pronged cooperation of our countries. Contacts between parliamentarians are important,” he said.
Deputy Federation Council Speaker Konstantin Kosachev took part in the meeting.
