Valentina Matvienko: The high level representation at the IPU Assembly attests to the relevance of inter-parliamentary dialogue

The Federation Council Speaker had a meeting with IPU President in Tashkent.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with President of the Inter-Parliamentary Union and Speaker of the National Assembly of the United Republic of Tanzania Tulia Ackson on the sidelines of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union.

Ms Matvienko noted the high organisational level of events at the 150th IPU Assembly, where the host country, Uzbekistan, and the IPU President and her team had created an atmosphere favouring an open and constructive dialogue.

Valentina Matvienko stressed that the forum was marked by a high level of representation. In her opinion, the participation of delegations from all over the world underscores the relevance and importance of inter-parliamentary interaction in the face of global challenges.

The Federation Council Speaker pointed out that the Inter-Parliamentary Union enjoyed high prestige with the international community. She welcomed the IPU’s course for a more active involvement in efforts to solve global development problems. Ms Matvienko believes that this format helps to elaborate some truly balanced and precise decisions reflecting a wide range of positions and interests. “It is this approach that is needed by the global inter-parliamentary system.”

The Russian side expressed an interest in attending the upcoming IPU events, including the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament and the 15th IPU Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament.

Tulia Ackson thanked Valentina Matvienko for her personal participation in the 150th IPU Assembly. According to President Ackson, it is very important that the Russian delegation always attends all IPU events and is actively involved in their work.

The meeting was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoy.
