Russian senators: Russia’s stance acknowledged in final documents of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union

IPU standing committees had made considerable efforts at their meetings to draft the forum’s final documents, Russian delegation members said.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Agriculture and Food Policy and Environmental Management Alexander Dvoinykh and First Deputy Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Andrey Denisov took part in the meetings of the IPU Standing Committee on Sustainable Development as part of the 150th Assembly of the Inter-Parliamentary Union in Tashkent.

While negotiating the draft resolution, “Parliamentary strategies to mitigate the long-lasting impact of conflicts, including armed conflicts, on sustainable development,” the Russian MPs managed to mitigate its politicisation and exclude openly anti-Russia statements. Necessary reservations were made on some of the points in the text of the resolution which were contrary to our approaches.

“If you look at Russia’s proposals over the past years, they are becoming increasingly more systemic targeting general balanced and fair development. For instance, the issue of food shortages is among the most acute ones. The Russian Federation is one of the biggest global actors of stability, and we reaffirm this position every year. We also consistently work on the climate agenda, and our country certainly plays a key role here” Alexander Dvoinykh stressed.

Andrey Denisov participated in the Standing Committee on Peace and International Security’s work on the resolution “The role of parliaments in advancing a two-State solution in Palestine.”

The senator urged the international parliamentary community to promptly find common ground and focus on possible parliamentary efforts to seek solutions.

Russia’s proposals included, among other things, the recognition of the need to assist all the needy people in the Palestine-Israel conflict zone, ensuring unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid, primarily medicines, launching the process of rehabilitating temporarily displaced persons and starting work on restoring the destroyed infrastructure.

“Only a two-State solution to this protracted conflict can guarantee lasting peace to the peoples of Palestine and Israel. International efforts must be invigorated towards this formula,” Andrey Denisov believes. He stressed that Russia’s stance on this issue was also acknowledged in the final document adopted by the 150th IPU Assembly.
