Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko is taking part in the Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, which is taking place in Geneva ahead of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
During their meeting, Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko and Inter-Parliamentary Union (IPU) President Tulia Ackson focused on inter-parliamentary ties and discussed their future and potential. They met in Geneva on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, shortly before the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament, organised by the IPU.
The Federation Council Speaker praised the excellent
organisation of the events. “The event has fostered an atmosphere conducive to open and constructive dialogue. The high-level representation is also
impressive, underscoring the relevance and importance of inter-parliamentary
cooperation in addressing global challenges,” Valentina Matvienko
emphasised.
Tulia Ackson thanked the Russian delegation for its active
participation in both the Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament and the 6th
World Conference of Speakers of Parliament.
Valentina Matvienko noted that face-to-face conversations with Tulia Ackson on the sidelines of major forums have become a good tradition. She recalled their April meeting at the 150th IPU Assembly in Uzbekistan, as well as at the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum in 2024, where Ackson also met with President of Russia Vladimir Putin.
“Your leadership in the IPU commands deep respect. Your presidency is the most successful in recent years, undoubtedly strengthened by your experience as a lawyer and parliamentarian, as well as your doctorate in Philosophy. Your diplomatic approach – engaging with various political forces without pressure – enhances the standing of the Inter-Parliamentary Union as an independent and respected institution,” the Federation Council Speaker said.
Valentina Matvienko highlighted the IPU’s active advocacy for strengthening the role of parliaments in the global agenda, from advancing the UN Sustainable Development Goals to promoting peacekeeping and gender equality.
The Federation Council Speaker also congratulated the IPU President on the UN General Assembly’s adoption of a new resolution on cooperation between the UN, national parliaments, and the Inter-Parliamentary Union. “This is an important step for parliamentary diplomacy, reinforcing its role in addressing global matters and recognising the IPU’s significance at the international level.”
The meeting was attended by Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin
Kosachev.
Valentina Matvienko also held several bilateral
meetings on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of Women Speakers of Parliament, including with Inter-Parliamentary Union Secretary General Martin Chungong.
During talks with President of the Swiss National Council Maja Riniker, the Federation Council Speaker noted that the summit provided an excellent opportunity for the Swiss Parliament to host a high-level international event.
