Russian parliamentarians reaffirm ongoing commitment to raising the Palestinian issue in inter-parliamentary structures – Valentina Matvienko

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with Speaker of the Palestine National Council, Rawhi Fattouh.

The conversation took place on the sidelines of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva.

During the meeting, Valentina Matvienko praised Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s participation in the celebrations marking the 80th anniversary of Victory in Moscow.

She also asked Rawhi Fattouh to convey her best wishes to Mahmoud Abbas, noting that Russia looks forward to hosting him at the first Russian-Arab Summit in Moscow this October.

The two speakers discussed the situation in the region.

Valentina Matvienko reaffirmed Russia’s commitment to the 1947 UN Security Council resolution on the two-state solution.

“Russia has been consistent in upholding this position and, as parliamentarians, we keep raising this issue within international parliamentary platforms, whenever we can,” she said. Russia continues to closely monitor the situation, the Federation Council Speaker went on to say.

“We will keep providing humanitarian assistance to the Palestinian side, in line with the policy approved by the President of the Russian Federation,” Valentina Matvienko pointed out. “We are deeply concerned about the tragedy facing the Palestinian people, and today, our main task is to stop the bloodshed as quickly as possible,” the Federation Council Speaker noted.

Rawhi Fattouh, in turn, emphasised that the top priority for the Palestinian people, the Palestinian National Council, and all Palestinian movements is “to stop the war and put an end to the hunger.”
