Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with Chairman of the Supreme People’s Assembly of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea Pak In-chol.
The conversation took place on the sidelines of the Sixth World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva. Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev and Deputy Speaker of the State Duma Pyotr Tolstoi took part in the talks.
Valentina Matvienko reminded the participants of the meeting that the Federation Council approved the ratification of the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and the DPRK in November 2024 after the leaders of the two countries, Vladimir Putin and Kim Jong-un, signed it in Pyongyang on June 19, 2024.
“Our two countries have forged solid ties which have proved their worth. We welcome the fact that political dialogue at all levels has been gaining momentum,” Valentina Matvienko said. “Russian parliamentarians are ready to step up our inter-parliamentary contacts,” the Federation Council Speaker pointed out.
She went on to say that the upper chamber of the Russian parliament is sometimes called the chamber of the regions. In this capacity, it is committed to enabling Russian regions to contribute to the strategic partnership and allied relations between Russia and the DPRK. “Not only border regions in Russia’s Far East, which know North Korea well, are interested in forging these ties. We need to move ahead with this agenda,” Valentina Matvienko said.
In his remarks, Pak In-chol said that the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership Treaty between Russia and the DPRK enables the people of North Korea to help the people of Russia in the fight for their sovereignty and territorial integrity.
