The Senator addressed a panel discussion during the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva.
Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture Lilia Gumerova took part in a panel discussion titled Women’s and Youth Participation in Parliament in a Time of Polarisation and Adversity during the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva, organised by the Interparliamentary Union.
“Russian women who are members of parliament are actively involved in providing legislative support for state policies across a variety of areas, including family care, child welfare, support for those in need of special protection, as well as the development of education and science and addressing environmental issues,” the member of parliament said.
Lilia Gumerova noted that the Federation Council’s international agenda prioritises work at the Eurasian Women’s Forum. “The 4th Eurasian Women’s Forum was held last year, bringing together women leaders from over 100 states.”
“The Federation Council Committee on Science, Education and Culture is holding a panel discussion focused on women in science. We emphasise support for young early-career researchers with children, assisting them in continuing their academic careers. We also prioritise the involvement of women in expanding international scientific cooperation. Russia is making considerable efforts to create favourable conditions for women’s participation in politics, the economy and social sphere, as well as research projects,” she noted.
“Our country is effectively implementing a national strategy that benefits women. The Presidential Council for Implementing the State Demographic and Family Policy, led by the Speaker of the Federation Council, aims to improve the demographic situation, strengthen the institution of the family and promote traditional family values,” she added.
Speaking about the involvement of young people in the life of the country, Lilia Gumerova said that the Chamber of Young Legislators was established over ten years ago at the initiative of the Speaker of the Federation Council, with current young deputies from regional parliaments taking part in its work. “The Chamber has evolved into a significant parliamentary institution that has achieved notable results during its activities. Some proposals from young MPs have become constitutional amendments and federal laws, expanding social security mechanisms and enhancing protection for vulnerable population groups.”
“Young MPs are taking an active part in expanding international youth contacts with their counterparts from friendly states. The 12th Forum of Russian and Belarusian Regions was dedicated to youth policies. This year, the Chamber of Young Legislators of Russia and the Africa Youth Congress signed a bilateral cooperation agreement, marking a significant milestone,” she said.
“I believe that Russia’s experience in creating favourable conditions for the active involvement of women and young people in parliamentary work and interparliamentary dialogue can prove useful for other states. We should unite in the interests of peace and promoting traditional values,” Lilia Gumerova said in conclusion.
