Valentina Matvienko: Time-tested Russian-Iranian relations are developing in the spirit of a genuine strategic partnership

Speaker of the Federation Council Valentina Matvienko had a meeting with Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

The conversation took place on the sidelines of the 6th World Conference of Speakers of Parliament in Geneva. Deputy Speaker of the Federation Council Konstantin Kosachev also attended the meeting.

“We use various platforms for holding meetings and continuing our interparliamentary dialogue,” Valentina Matvienko said.

She noted that, in 2024, Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf visited St Petersburg and met with the President of Russia on the sidelines of the 10th BRICS Parliamentary Forum.

Federation Council Speaker Valentina Matvienko met with Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of the Islamic Republic of Iran Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf.

“We can say with confidence that the time-tested Russian-Iranian relations are developing in the spirit of a genuine strategic partnership. These relations are based on the principles of equality, respecting each other’s interests and taking them into account, mutual assistance and support, which are consistently reflected in specific projects and yield tangible results,” the Federation Council Speaker noted.

Valentina Matvienko emphasised that the people of Russia continue to support Iran during this challenging time for their Iranian friends. “Russia has firmly condemned the Israeli attack and the subsequent US air strike against the Iranian nuclear facilities,” the Federation Council Speaker pointed out, adding that the recent baseless aggression against Iran cannot be justified in any way.

According to Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf, many global and regional events have taken place since their last meeting. The Speaker of the Islamic Consultative Assembly of Iran noted that the criminal and illegal attack against his country violates international law.

During their conversation, Valentina Matvienko and Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf also discussed the efforts of MPs to uphold the UN Charter and support international law for guaranteeing international peace and security.

The meeting’s agenda also covered cooperation between Russian regions and Iranian provinces.
