Grigory Karasin: Russia calls for strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter, honestly and without double standards

The Senator commented on the participation of the Russian delegation in the 80th session of the UN General Assembly.

Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin took part in the High-Level Week of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly. The Russian delegation was led by Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov. The annual meeting of political leaders of the UN member states and high-level delegations was held in New York, US, on 23−27 September 2025.

In that period, the Russian foreign minister attended about 40 bilateral and multilateral meetings, Grigory Karasin said.

The Senator emphasised that the past session of the UN General Assembly was held in the year of the 80th anniversary of the UN and Victory in World War II. He stated that the position of the Russian delegation, which Sergey Lavrov presented in his statement at the plenary session, was based on the recognition of harsh reality and strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter by all member states without resorting to double standards.

“We have provided unpleasant truths about the Kiev regime, which launched the policy of banning the Russian language and dismantling the Ukrainian Orthodox Church after the 2014 state coup. Ukraine is the only country in the world that has a law suppressing the native language of nearly half of its population,” the Senator said.

“Our country remains open to negotiations, provided the rights of Russian speakers and the strategic security of Russia are reliably guaranteed,” Grigory Karasin stated.

He noted that Russia’s principled views had also been made in connection with the Middle East crisis and Iran’s nuclear programme.

Another issue discussed in New York was a reform of the UN that would meet the interests of all member states. “We raised the issue of increasing international security problems. Not only Europe but also the Pacific and the South China Sea are being drawn into a confrontation,” the senator said.

Grigory Karasin pointed out that Brussels and the EU and NATO countries were talking more often about a third world war as a probability. “Russia calls for strict compliance with the principles of the UN Charter, honestly and without double standards.”

“Bilateral meetings with politicians focused not only on international issues but also on the development of bilateral relations, and were held in a constructive atmosphere,” Grigory Karasin said in conclusion.
