Federation Council adopts statement on US threats against Venezuela

Senators express firm support for Venezuelan Leadership in defending national sovereignty.

At its 600th plenary meeting, the Federation Council adopted a Statement concerning threats by the United States against the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela.

The rapporteur on the matter was Grigory Karasin, Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs.

Senator Karasin reported that the United States has deployed a naval group to the southern Caribbean Sea, near the territorial waters of Venezuela. He stated that these provocative actions contravene universally recognised principles and norms of international law, including the UN Charter, and are causing a dangerous escalation of tensions in the Caribbean and Latin America.

The Statement expresses the Federation Council’s firm support for the Venezuelan leadership in defending the nation’s sovereignty.

“The senators of the Russian Federation advocate for stable and independent development across Latin America and the Caribbean. We believe it is imperative to refrain from escalation and threats. Any cross-border issues that arise must be resolved through cooperative dialogue between nations within the framework of international law,” the document reads.

The senators emphasised that the Russian Federation and the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela are bound by a strategic partnership, and confirmed their commitment to further strengthening and expanding bilateral cooperation with Venezuela’s National Assembly.

Furthermore, the Federation Council calls upon the Inter-Parliamentary Union, other international parliamentary organisations, and the parliaments of foreign states to resolutely condemn the threats of force against Venezuela and to advocate for preserving peace in the Latin American and Caribbean region.

The statement will be sent to the United Nations, the Inter-Parliamentary Union, the Interparliamentary Assembly of Member Nations of the Commonwealth of Independent States, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union State of Belarus and Russia, the Parliamentary Assembly of the Collective Security Treaty Organisation, the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation, the Arab Parliament, the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament, the Mercosur Parliament, the Central American Parliament, the African Parliamentary Union, the Asian Parliamentary Assembly, the ASEAN Inter-Parliamentary Assembly, and the Asia-Pacific Parliamentary Forum.
