The Russian side noted that its senators expect to restore interparliamentary cooperation with Sudanese colleagues.
Chair of the Federation Council Committee on Foreign Affairs Grigory Karasin had a meeting with Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation of the Republic of the Sudan Muawiya Khalid.
Grigory Karasin noted that Sudan is an important partner of Russia in the Arab world and on the African continent. This year the countries will mark the 70th anniversary of their diplomatic relations.
He pointed out that an armed confrontation has been ongoing in Sudan for three years. “We welcome the international efforts to establish relations between the government and opposition forces in Sudan,” said the Senator.
Grigory Karasin underlined that Russia stands for the preservation of unity, territorial integrity and sovereignty of Sudan, and stated the urgency to put the inter-Sudanese conflict onto a political and diplomatic track as soon as possible.
“We also expect restoration of our interparliamentary cooperation to strengthen interstate interaction in a variety of domains, said Grigory Karasin.
Muawiya Khalid spoke about his vision of the settlement prospects and provided his estimate of the ongoing mediation efforts.
The parties reached an understanding to assist in establishing regular contacts between Russian and Sudanese representatives.
